Review Alpha Wing 2

Alpha Wing 2 offers classic vertical space shooting action, delivered in an attractive package of extremely stylish and colourful graphics that are part 2D and part 3D. The game is a pure joy to play through, keeping the amount of buttons to be pressed to an absolute minimum and the amount of fire and explosions to an absolute maximum. The relatively small amount of levels (even though they are challenging) keeps this one from achieving true classic status.

Total Score:

Excellent!

Gameplay: 90%

Alpha Wing 2 is a vertical space shooter in the tradition of games like Raiden, Aleste and Radiant Silvergun. You choose out of three different jet fighters and blast off to liberate every planet in the solar system form evil alien scum. Alpha Wing 2 plays very smoothly with not too many buttons to be pressed (especially with auto-fire turned on in the options screen), has an interesting shield system and is highly enjoyable, with tonnes of enemies to destroy with you multicoloured rays of death. Classic shoot 'em up action.

Graphics: 91%

Alpha Wing 2 mixes colourful 2D sprites, drawn backgrounds and graphical effects, with 3D modelled terrain, like rock formations and construction shapes, to great effect. Combined with the distinctive art direction and enemy- and character design, this creates a vibrant visual experience.

Sound: 88%

Sadly, the game features hardly any sound effects, but the booming and 'gamey' background music more than makes up for it, reminding you of the arcades and the glory days of the shoot 'em up genre.

Difficulty: 88%

Like any respectable shoot 'em up, this game offers a steep challenge, with enemies and projectiles making your onscreen life very difficult. But Alpha Wing 2 is just a little bit more accessible than other games of its ilk, due to two reasons. First of all, when a level is completed, it can directly be accessed when a new game is started, allowing you to start a particularly hard level with three fresh lives. And then there's the shield, that can be turned on when recharged, protecting you from projectiles but not from direct collisions. Doing so will detract 1000 points from your score each time, though.

Replay value: 86%

Alpha WIng 2 is not a very big game, but the high difficulty level will prevent you from finishing it all that fast. The high-score based game play will make you want to do better each time you play, and the three different selectable pilots offer an extra excuse to play through everything more than once as well.
