Review Ultimate Spiderman

Ultimate Spiderman features a nice little game play concept that will have you choose between Spiderman and Venom and duke it out with the other over then course of 24 huge levels. Despite both characters offering the player enough differences in game play style, the concept spreads itself too thin, rather predictably, and makes you wish there was more to the game than hunting down your wall-clinging counterpart over and over again.

Ultimate Spiderman is an arcade-style platform beat 'em up in which you can choose to play as Spiderman or his arch enemy Venom. Depending on your choice, the objectives and situation slightly differs. As Spiderman, you swing through levels, trying to protect innocent bystanders from the hungry Venom and taking out street thugs that don't seem to like you and the occasional super villain. As Venom, you move through levels, trying to stay alive by eating innocent bystanders, while street thugs ánd police are aiming for your head. But your main purpose in both variations is to find your wall-clinging and web-shooting arch enemy in every level and defeat him. It's a nice concept, and the controls are decent, but doing the exact same thing over 24 levels tends to wear down on the player.

While the cityscape-style backgrounds look pretty bland, the main characters in the game are instantly recognisable and well-animated.

Sound: 69%

Loud, crude sound effects is all you will hear in Ultimate Spiderman.

Difficulty: 77%

Due to your (spider) sense, it's never a problem to find your opponent and enemies usually don't pose that big of a challenge. Playing as Venom feels a little bit more urgent, however, as he needs to keep on feeding on bystanders to maintain his energy levels as well.

Replay value: 68%

Ultimate Spiderman features 24 levels of considerable size. It is unfortunate that there is not much variation in these levels, which doesn't stimulate the player to keep on playing.
